KNOXVILLE SOUTH WATERFRONT

"Knoxville's South Waterfront will be an active, attractive, and distinct part of downtown Knoxville, and a gateway to diverse neighborhoods, waterfront recreation, revitalized business districts, and places of employment. It will preserve and enhance things that make it special today. It will be a better place to live, work, play, and move around."
- Mayor Bill Haslam

With the help of many citizens, property owners, neighborhood residents, and technical experts, the South Waterfront Vision Plan, Action Plan, Urban Renewal and Redevelopment Plan, and Form Based Development Code were adopted by City Council in a span of 10 months.

The plan for the South Waterfront includes a continuous Riverwalk along the shoreline, several parks and other "windows" to the water, public improvements for streets, sidewalks, bikeways, and parking, and private development that will add new housing units, retail and office space, and entertainment opportunities.

Prospects for public-private partnerships that will benefit residents, businesses, visitors, and the city's tax base have never been brighter.

PHASE I
PUBLIC IMPROVEMENTS

The South Waterfront Action Plan recommends that several public projects be started in Phase I (0-5 years). Construction funding for the projects identified above is not guaranteed, and project priorities may change as more information becomes available.

The current scope of work and the schematic design plans and renderings for the Phase I improvements are available in the column to the right.

SOUTH WATERFRONT
ADVISORY BOARD

As required by the South Waterfront Urban Renewal & Redevelopment Plan, an Advisory Board established by Knoxville's Community Development Corporation (KCDC) addresses dilapidated buildings & properties, homeowner retention & assistance programs, and neighborhood concerns.

The South Waterfront Advisory Board is currently in hiatus as City Departments & KCDC work together to inventory properties within the redevelopment area with the intent to return to the Advisory Board with only those properties that require attention from the Advisory Board according to their established criteria.

SOUTH WATERFRONT PRINCIPLES

The basic principles for the South Waterfront project issued by Mayor Bill Haslam are as follows: "THE DECISION-MAKING PROCESS WILL BE OPEN AND TRANSPARENT AND THE PLAN MUST BE ECONOMICALLY REALISTIC." To that end, all of the documents that have been produced during an extensive public review and comment period lasting more than 2 years are available in the column to the right.
